Guru Amar Das Ji became Guru when he was 73 years old! For twelve years before that, he carried water every day for Guru Angad Dev Ji.

He made a rule: everyone must eat in the Langar before meeting the Guru. When the mighty Emperor Akbar visited, even he sat on the floor and ate with everyone else.

Guru Amar Das Ji spoke up for women: he was against the practice of sati (widows being forced into fire) and against women hiding their faces. He trained both men and women as teachers. He also built a deep step-well called a baoli at Goindwal, with 84 steps.
