What is Sikhism?

Sikhism is a religion that began over 500 years ago in Punjab, a land of five rivers in South Asia (today split between India and Pakistan).

It was started by Guru Nanak Dev Ji. He taught that there is one God who lives in everyone, so all people are equal — boys and girls, rich and poor, people of every religion and colour.

The word Sikh means learner or student. Sikhs learn from their ten human Gurus and from their holy book, Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
