Sikh Flag, Khanda & the 5 Takhts

Some pictures tell a big story. Let’s explore the Sikh flag (Nishan Sahib), the Sikh emblem (Khanda) and the five Takhts — the most important seats of Sikh authority.

1 Nishan Sahib — the Sikh flag

The Nishan Sahib is the Sikh flag. It is a tall, triangular flag that flies outside every Gurdwara, so it can be seen from far away.

It tells everyone: “Here is a Gurdwara. Anyone can come here for food, shelter and peace.” Nishan means “sign” or “mark”.

🎨 Try both colours

The Nishan Sahib is usually saffron or dark blue. Sikhs have used both colours for hundreds of years.

🚩 Nishan Sahib facts

  • Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji is remembered for raising the Nishan Sahib at the Akal Takht in Amritsar.
  • Two Nishan Sahibs fly between Sri Darbar Sahib and the Akal Takht, for Miri and Piri. The Piri flag is a little taller, showing that spiritual wisdom should guide worldly power.
  • Every year, often at Vaisakhi, the Sangat lowers the pole, washes it with water and milk, and wraps it in a fresh Chola Sahib. Everyone joins in this seva.
  • Wherever Sikhs settle in the world, one of the first things they put up is a Nishan Sahib.

2 The Khanda — the Sikh emblem

The Khanda is the emblem of Sikhism. You can see it on the Nishan Sahib, on Gurdwaras, and on badges, books and flags.

It is made of three parts, and each one teaches something important.

3 The 5 Takhts

Takht means “throne”. The five Takhts are the most important seats of Sikh authority. Important decisions and messages for all Sikhs are given from them, and many Sikhs hope to visit all five in their lifetime.
